Your Body’s Reset Button: Innate Intelligence in Action – Dr Shaun Hidge

I fondly remember my first day at RMIT University. Thinking about it always brings a smile to my face. I recall the excitement, the anticipation, and the hum of student chatter as a ‘larger-than-life’ chiropractor burst through the lecture theatre doors, capturing our attention.

Without an introduction he bellowed out, “Who has had diarrhea?” We all looked at each other a little surprised and intimidated. Many of us raised our hands. He continued, “Are you sick or are you healthy?” This statement really made us reflect, and for many of us, it changed our thought processes.

As a chiropractor, I spend most of my week adjusting patients to balance their spine and nervous system, which allows you to be the best version of you. But balance isn’t just about your spine — it’s also about making sure that internally, you are in harmony. And at times, your body needs to be reset. Your body uses vomiting and diarrhea to do just that.

If your body is exposed to substances that might not agree with you — like spoiled food, bacteria, viruses, or toxins — it initiates a response to protect you. Vomiting and diarrhea are two of your body’s most effective ways of ejecting what your body doesn’t want.

While unpleasant, these processes are a sign that your immune system is working as it should. It feels disgusting and can be very messy, but it’s also very necessary. Afterwards, many people say they feel much better!

If symptoms are prolonged or severe, you should seek medical attention. However, if it happens on the odd occasion, it could just be your body’s way of saying, “Thanks for listening — I’ve got this under control.”

The Body’s Innate Intelligence and the Role of Chiropractic

Dr Shaun’s story highlights something powerful — the idea that the body is not broken or fragile. In fact, it is remarkably intelligent. Your body is constantly working to maintain balance, flush out what it doesn’t need, and adapt to its environment. This is what we call the innate intelligence of the body — the natural, inborn wisdom that governs function and healing.

Your Nervous System: The Master Control Centre

At the heart of this innate intelligence is your nervous system. It controls and coordinates every cell, organ, and system in your body. From your immune response to your digestion, hormone regulation, and even the way you sleep and recover — it’s all linked back to how efficiently your brain and body can communicate.

But when the spine becomes misaligned (a condition known as a vertebral subluxation), it can interfere with this communication. That’s where chiropractic care comes in.

How Chiropractic Supports Whole-Body Health

Chiropractic adjustments aim to restore proper alignment and motion in the spine, which in turn improves nervous system function. This helps your body adapt more effectively, heal more efficiently, and function at its fullest potential.

It’s not just about pain relief. It’s about optimising how your body performs — so that when challenges arise (like a virus or food poisoning), your system is ready to respond with clarity and speed.

Supporting Your Body’s Natural Intelligence

Whether it’s a “reset” like vomiting and diarrhea, or simply the ongoing demands of daily life, your body is built to adapt and thrive. Chiropractic care helps support that natural process — not by adding anything to the body, but by removing interference that prevents it from working as it should.

At Sims & Finn Chiropractic, our goal is to help you function at your best — from the inside out.
